A design is the best way to plan an overall site layout, to assure that all chosen elements are accounted for and that traffic patterns flow nicely. The design process also makes it possible to explore different options before a final decision is made. A master plan allows you to visualize the finished product, and allows a project to be completed in stages if desired.
I typically start the design process with a consultation (see the Consulation page). After seeing the site I can quote a price for a design. Fees generally range between $600-$900 for a residential project - sometimes more, sometimes less - depending on what sort of amenities you would like to include and how much work is involved. The topography and tree cover have a definite effect. A down payment, usually 1/3 to 1/2 of the total fee, is requested.
During our initial meeting we can discuss your needs, desires, and preferences, and you may review my portfolio. Any reasonably accurate house plans, property surveys, or plot plans that you have are useful at this stage.
Next I do a site survey, taking measurements and locating key elements, which are transferred to a scaled base drawing.
At the next stage, preliminary sketches are provided that explore different design approaches. After these are reviewed and discussed, I proceed with a final design.
The final design consists of black & white scaled drawings, a color rendering, itemized materials list, plants photos, and an installation proposal.
